How do I tell the difference between silicone and rubber?

When igniting rubber, it will melt and the fire will release black smoke, given that rubber is oil-based. Silicone, however, consists of pebbles which, when ignited, will release a clear flame and turn into white ash.

For example, a garden hose made of silicone will not become tender the same way as a garden hose made of rubber; despite it being exposed to the sun throughout the entire summer.
